Seminar: Perspectives on a Work of Art

Hanasaari, Espoo, Friday 10 September 2021 – Online Event (Please register for link to participate)

10 am to 4 pm (10:00–16:00 EET)

Artists O, Hanaholmen Cultural Center and the Cultural Foundation for Sweden and Finland are organising a seminar on the concept of works of art on Hanaholmen on Friday 10 September, from 10 am to 4 pm. Register for the seminar by 9 September 3 pm in order to receive the link to the online event!

The seminar is part of the program in connection with the inauguration of the exhibition Länk – Link – Linkki and one of Artist O's 15th anniversary events. The language of the seminar is English, and it is open to everyone. Due to new coronavirus restrictions, the seminar will be organised as an online event and it is free of charge for those participating online.

The seminar presentations consider the concept of a work of art in contemporary art, with a special focus on material-based and industrial art. The content of the work of art is also examined from the perspective of public art. What is the current relationship between a work of art and a craft? How does urban planning and architecture perceive a work of art? In the seminar program, artists will share experiences of collaborative processes, and there will be time for discussion. The list of participating artists and speakers will be completed later.

Confirmed seminar speakers are Adjunct Professor Martta Heikkilä, Ph.D., researcher in aesthetics at the University of Helsinki, where her areas of interest include current theories of art and in particular post-phenomenological and structuralist philosophy of art; Jewellery Artist and Project Manager at Ornamo Art and Design Finland, Anna Rikkinen, B.Des, Bachelor of Culture and Arts, who will talk about the role of arts and crafts in the built environment; and Aalto University professor Maarit Mäkelä, D.A., who studies a work of art in material-based visual arts. Marcia Sá Cavalcante Schuback, PhD, professor of philosophy at Södertörn University will discuss the topic Emergences – the concept of art today as experience.

The seminar speeches will be recorded and they will be available on Hanaholmen’s website after the seminar.

Länk – Link – Linkki is a joint exhibition by Artists O och Fiber Art Sweden (FAS) in Hanaholmen’s gallery from 9 September 2021 to 30 January 2022. Members of both associations are active in visual arts, design and crafts, and all have a strong connection to the material, which often defines the works’ concrete and conceptual content. The theme content of the exhibition has been created in collaboration between the artists. Many of the artists in the exhibition work with the theme of lightness in their works. The works of art are separate, but the interactive work between the artists has guided the process.

The artists of the exhibition:

  • Hugger-Mugger working group: Maria Hägglund, Catarina W. Källström and Elinor Ström (SE) – Piia Lieste (FI)
  • Sonja Löfgren-Birch (SE, FI) – Veera Tamminen (FI)
